Doctor Fate Injustice 2 Battle Simulator

Media type: Video Game
Title: Injustice 2 (Legendary Edition)
Released: May 11, 2017
Format: PS4
Played before?: Yes

Hey peeps and welcome to a written playthrough of Injustice 2, specifically the Battle Simulator. It’s a cheaper way to talk about video games. No need for video capture, editing software, audio recording. Just plain old typed words.

This review is about Doctor Fate’s battle simulator. It’s on the very easy difficulty, go read the other intros as to why. He started off at a level 3.

Now, before I get into the fights, it’s time for random musing time. I don’t know that much about DC Comics and their heroes save Batman and Superman. Not for not wanting to know, but just plain not having time. As I look at the character and the things he does, he reminds me of Doctor Strange over in Marvel. They both have magic which is derived from ancient power. They can see the future and see the outcomes. I’m sure there’s more similarities but I also don’t really know that much about Doctor Strange. I know that Marvel and DC have taken pot shots at each other with different heroes, so it makes me wonder if that’s what has happened here.

Fight 1: Hellboy

It’s Brother Eye in the Bat Cave. So new, so different. I keep hoping that the loading screen will be different every time I start a new fight. I’m 0/8 so far.

I’ll admit, I’m not great with the magic fighters. They usually require more range and their attacks aren’t as powerful, which makes them more vulnerable. I remember having a lot of difficulty in the novice simulator with Doctor Fate. Here, not so much.

Hellboy didn’t even get a hit on me until close to the end of his second life bar. Of course, that hit was his super move. We had a clash earlier, so I didn’t realize that his bar had already filled up again. Taking that hit threw off my rhythm. That and writing down that I was getting hit with a super move. Some super moves are kind of long and some are short and there’s no way in hell that I can remember how long each of these characters super moves are.

Of course, I used my super move and ended the fight.

Fight 2: Gorilla Grodd

The level was the Power Core in Red Sun Prison. No level transition.

The fight wasn’t too terribly difficult. I got tripped up on some of Doctor Fate’s spell casting. While I can fight with him, I can’t fight well with him. Grodd attempted to use his super move, which failed. I used mine and ended the fight.

Doctor Fate leveled up to level 4.

Fight 3: Starfire

This fight took place in Gorilla City. There was some breaking of the animal statues because the AI absolutely loves that environmental interaction. To be fair, I do too.

I don’t really have much to say about the fight, so I’m going to talk about Starfire’s color schemes. I love seeing her alternate colors whenever I have to fight against her. Most are really bright and colorful in a game where most of the shaders are muted and involve some variation of black or brown.

It was here that I saw Fate’s magic being unwieldy for me. It wasn’t even the combo attacks that were the main problem. It was just the basic attacks that I couldn’t connect together.

I used a super move and finished the fight.

Fight 4: Raiden

The fight took place at the Front Gates of Arkham Asylum. I tried for a level transition but Raiden was annoying about it.

So, Raiden’s favorite move in this match was the propelled lightning move, where he pushed you to the edge of the level. He did this every time I tried to do the level transition. Since I wasn’t getting the transition, I decided to explore what Fate’s character power is. I worked out that it caused more damage to my opponent, which had to be a fluke for me to notice. If it’s not an apparent power, I usually have no clue what it does. Even then, I still might have no clue. See: Blue Beetle.

Still, I used the super move and finished the fight.

Fight 5: Catwoman

The fight took place in front of the Empire Theater in Gotham. No level transition this time either.

This fight had a challenge to win the fight in under 110 seconds. I have to say, I am getting a lot of different challenges each time I play the advanced simulator. The novice simulator had a lot of challenges that required you to use basic attacks a certain number of times. I won the fight in 65 seconds. It would’ve been shorter but Catwoman decided to fight back in the last half.

I also want to note that the gear Catwoman was using in this match had the same hair clipping problem that I experienced when I played with Catwoman. It really looks sloppy.

Super move used. Match ended. Leveled up to level 5.

Fight 6: Green Arrow

This fight took place in the Rock of Eternity in Kahndaq. I actually managed to get a level transition this time over to Black Adam’s Palace.

This fight also had a challenge attached to use 6 ducking attacks. I completed this challenge as I’m already in that stance anyways. Because of this, I didn’t have my usual problem of getting a lot of hits against me while I’m trying to complete the challenge.

The shader used for Green Arrow in this match was hilarious to me. He looked like a goddamn pumpkin. Is orange a legitimate color used in the Green Arrow color scheme? It was probably the one time they should have muted the color.

I used the super move and ended the fight.

Fight 7: Red Hood

This took place in the Joker’s Playground. It’s a weird place to have to fight Jason but I don’t choose the levels.

The fight was relatively standard. I punched him a little. He punches me a little. I question in real life if the computer simulation is having a hard time being in a place named after the person who tortured and killed him. You know, normal things.

What was fun was when I went to use my super move. Red Hood was in a block position, but moved out of it just in time for me to hit. It was nice to see that the AI has issues with staying in block position too.

Fight 8: Brainiac

I knew this fight was going to be tougher. Still not having a grasp on Fate’s magic was not going to be good against Brainiac. I was correct. Fate had too much recovery time between hits, which allowed Brainiac to hit me with his lasers. A lot. It also took some time, but I did manage the level transition. It helps knocking out a chunk of his health so much.

In the end, I still had one health bar left. For using a magic character, I didn’t actually do horribly. I used a super move and ended the fight.

The Ending

Again, I know nothing of Fate’s backstory. It’s nice that they added some other DC characters to flesh out his story. I know of Zatanna because she was the reason I began hating magic characters in fighting games. Girl was the only one to almost lose her fight with Superman over in the first Injustice game. I’ve definitely heard of Constantine, since he’s moved to actually being in live action media but I’ve never actually watched anything with him in it. I felt the ending was actually satisfying though. In the story, it was clear that Kent was conflicted with what the Helm was telling him. It was a very nice touch that he decided to give up his power after seeing what true destruction the Helm was about to cause.

Overall Score: 1,040,263

Landing super moves really helps the score. Yet that doesn’t correlate with the characters I play best with.

Top Five Ranking of Characters:

  1. Catwoman (1,063,054)
  2. Doctor Fate (1,040,263)
  3. Cyborg (1,030,601)
  4. Swamp Thing (1,027,787)
  5. Sub-Zero (991,455)

Until the next battle, where I may be shocked once again by who I can and cannot play with.
