Format: PS4
Played before?: Yes

Hey peeps and welcome to a written playthrough of Injustice 2, specifically the Battle Simulator. The skills haven’t improved, but the persistence that someone cares about reading this is still here. I really am talking into the void, aren’t I?

This battle simulator focuses on the Joker. It’s, yet again, the advanced battle simulator on very easy. Joker starts off at a level 3.

I have to start this one off with a semi-controversial statement for some parts of the internet. I really do not like the Joker. I cannot stand him as a villain, in any iteration. The closest I can tolerate him is the small bit I’ve played of Arkham Asylum. My preferred villains aren’t ones that thrive on causing chaos and anarchy just because they can. I understand that makes him a very dangerous villain because of the unpredictable nature, but I just don’t care. The fact that he is continuously the main villain in Batman lore is grating because Batman is one of the few heroes that has a really good rogues gallery.

This game is the worst offender of shoehorning the Joker into Batman media. There is absolutely no reason the Joker should be a character in this game. At least, not in the base game. It would have been a little easier to accept if he were a DLC character, but no. He’s been in the game since the beginning. He appears once in the main game, as a hallucination for Harley. That’s it. He’s dead in this universe and isn’t even the driving conflict in the story. His design is awful because they just ripped off the horrendous Suicide Squad design. Granted, this is slightly improved over that version, but the Joker looks better in his tailored suit. The voice actor is trying his hardest to imitate Mark Hamill’s Joker, but it almost sounds fake coming out of the weird design choices they’ve made. As in, the voice and the look don’t match. DC has a robust gallery of heroes and villains. They should have chosen another character to replace the Joker in this game.

Poorly written rant aside, let’s actually get into the battle simulator.

Fight 1: Raiden

Yeah, yeah, it starts in the Bat Cave.

I learned very quickly that I’m not good at fighting with the Joker. Once again, he uses a lot of gadgets and I’m not great with gadget fighters. My problem is that he has too many gadgets for any one of them to truly be useful. He’s got a knife, a gun, a crowbar, and the gas canisters. And those are the ones that just pop up the most. Obviously, the Joker is not trained in hand-to-hand combat, but there’s just one too many gadgets for him to be using.

Despite not really understanding how his moves work, the fight was fairly simple. I wasn’t able to build up the meter for a super move so Raiden just got defeated normally.

Fight 2: Robin

This fight took place in Slaughter Swamp.

A challenge was attached to use 4 light moves during the match, which I did successfully. Those are some of the few challenges I can actually complete because I know what it’s asking me to do.

This fight was tough. Robin holds nothing back when I fight against him. When he goes airborne, it’s disastrous for me. He hit me with his super move. He knocked me down to one health bar. He was rough for a second match in the simulator. The entire time, I was just floundering, hoping I could hit him. I did eventually manage to win the fight, but my super move missed in the end.

Fight 3: Catwoman

The fight took place in Gorilla City.

I could never get the Joker to do anything more than his basic moves. More than likely, it’s because the Joker’s moves don’t hit as hard as some of the other characters so I find them lacking. I’m sure if chained correctly, he would be a formidable fighter, but this is me. It’s highly unlikely I would ever be able to figure that out.

I managed to avoid Catwoman’s super move, if only by pure luck. I just happened to be standing a little too close to her for her pounce to hit me. I did manage to hit her with my super move and end the fight.

The Joker leveled up to level 4.

Fight 4: Atrocitus

This fight took place in the Empire Theatre Prop Room.

Atrocitus kept trapping me in the swirling red vortex move, which is a pain. Especially because I would never be able to figure that move out. Against Atrocitus, the Joker’s moves really aren’t going to do the damage they need to do. He can easily pummel the Joker off the side of the stage whereas the Joker doesn’t have that sort of power. Again, I’m sure there are smart people who could figure that dilemma out. I am not that smart of a person.

I missed with the super move again, so the fight had to be finished off normally.

Fight 5: Leonardo

This fight happened in the Fortress of Solitude.

Leonardo kept spamming the other turtles to help him attack me throughout the match. I managed to avoid getting hit by most of them. I wasn’t so lucky when it came to the katanas coming out.

I have to say, for me, the gas canisters are pretty useless when fighting. The only thing they are really good for is knocking an opponent out of a stance. The gas doesn’t have any effect on the characters. It’s the weakest of the gadgets that the Joker has. To have multiple moves involving the canisters really weakens the Joker’s fighting style.

There was another missed super move in this match, but the match did eventually end.

Fight 6: Green Lantern

This started out in the Containment Center of Red Sun Prison before moving to the Power Core section.

This fight had a challenge attached to use 7 sweep attacks. I did not complete this challenge. I don’t think I did one sweep attack. I’m pretty sure I do know what a sweep attack is. I’m just not proficient enough to be able to do them on command.

Luckily, after taking some vicious beatings in the fights before, Green Lantern was an easier fight. I was thankful for this, but it worried me as well because I know the end game of the simulator well.

I actually got to use the super move and end the fight.

Fight 7: The Flash

This started out in the Rock of Eternity and moved to Black Adam’s Palace.

The Flash was not an easy fight. He almost took me down to one health bar. I want to know where this Flash was when I was fighting with him. (I’m still a little bitter about how that simulator turned out.) Unfortunately, most of the attacks I could do as the Joker were not in block position and he doesn’t easily crouch down. It really is open season on me when I play this game.

I managed to use my super move and end the match. The Joker went to level 5.

Fight 8: Brainiac

What the hell. This was the easiest match of the simulator. I don’t know what Brainiac was on in this fight, but I’m okay with it. Going into this match, I was prepared to really have to fight for my win. I kind of foresaw it being a match I would lose. Then I played it. He hit me, maybe, three times in the entire match. I was so confused but I took it. I wasn’t really going to complain that I actually did okay in this match.

The Ending

It really is a super basic Joker watching the world burn ending. There’s never a question as to where this Joker came from. No mention of any other characters, in-game or otherwise. Sure, it fits the character, but what’s the point of this if it doesn’t even tie back to the actual Injustice story? As stated above, he’s a character that’s accessible from the start. From what I can recall, every character that’s in the base game at least has some sort of tie to the story proper. This means nothing. It’s absolutely stand-alone, which is fine if it were even explained how the Joker exists.

Overall Score: 898,032

Yeah, as soon as I started missing super moves, I knew he wasn’t getting a good score. I’m okay with that.

Top Five Ranking of Characters:

  1. Catwoman (1,063,054)
  2. Green Arrow (1,057,829)
  3. Doctor Fate (1,040,263)
  4. Cyborg (1,030,601)
  5. Swamp Thing (1,027,787)

Until the next battle, where someone awaits.
